Priming

Ask the MoB I have been a member for about 5 mins already. My first brew was a Doric can of malt in the late 50s, it came out of the bottle like a yeasty volcano, but as there was a beer strike on and it was stinking hot it wasn't all bad. Since retiring I have time to get a bit more serious about brewing, I mostly use Muntons kits and add a bit of this and that, somtimes impressed with result, sometimes not ! . My main problem is geting DME for priming, I like Muntons Spraymalt but seems hard to get, I have emailed and phoned Vintners in Kitchener, Nor response. I am not into advanced brewing but any suggestion would be most welcome. Regards, Wendat in Barrie

I've been a Member of Barleyment for a few weeks and It has helped me learn a few things more things about homebrewing. I am just starting to brew all grain.

The internet has also provided great help to become an all grain homebrewer.

Here are a few links I have found very helpfull:

Ask the MoB I've recently taken up homebrewing again and have realized there are no good suppliers around Toronto. I don't mind going the mail order route but hate having to order from the U.S. mainly because of the price and the time it takes. Do you guys know of any suppliers near the region. I'm mainly interested in liquid yeast. thanks alot. i love the website

I first got into brewing in London Ont. back in 1987 or '88, so I've been brewing for a while. However, I always stuck to the pre-hopped one-can kits, because they were easy, cheap, and consistent.

What the hey, I was young, cheap and not terribly consistent. The LHBS also had a couple of kits I really liked and brewed regularly, so life was good. I also got into winemaking at the time, and even got adventurous enough to make a peach wine from scratch. Around that time I also tried my first scratch beer, a Yuletide Ale - big beer, bunch of mistakes, not a very good result. So... back to the kits.

Fast-forward a bunch of years, now I'm in Burlington, the rules have changed a bit, the kids are older, but the LHBS isn't as good. I just can't be satisfied with the Cooper's and Munton's kits. They don't always have a good one in stock, and when I want to brew, I want to brew NOW! That's a principal reason I've always brewed at home - I don't want to be tied to their hours. Been looking into better methods for a while now, and I've just brewed my first (okay my second, but maybe first GOOD) extract/grain beer (American Pale Ale). It's in secondary right now, and as I type this, I'm drinking probably my last kit beer - a Cooper's Canadian Blonde.

Anyway, that's where I'm at. I have found and joined the email list, but I thought I'd also put an intro up here...

Cheers! Tim

Brewing Hardware I have a plastic pail that a friend gave me for cooking the mash. It has two heating elements in the bottom, but is missing any wiring or thermostat. I'm trying to find if I can get the rest of the hardware for this setup. Have digipics I wanted to post with this message, is that possible in this forum?

New member intro

Hi,

I've been brewing for only a short time now - 3 Brew Canada kits using the kit instructions. The results have been OK, but I would like better. I started a Brew House Pale Ale this weekend to see how it turns out. My father has been successfully brewing the kits for years, now my son started doing the same in first year Carleton U.

I browse the internet for information and ideas, and was surprised to find this site right in my own back yard so to speak, so I am joining the MoB. There are lots of experiences and stories to learn from here. The Co-op bulk buying is also a great idea that we are interested in.
Great Site!

Looking forward to some tasty beer soon,

Wayne F

Ask the MoB Hello all, your website was passed on to me from a brewer in Toronto, I live in Kingston and I am having a hard time finding a reliable supplier of Wyeast. My local store deals with a supplier that is hot and cold and therefore my requests for yeast take a long time , too long , so with you expertise, can you turn me on to a Wyeast supplier that is reliable?Id like to keep it in the area, I know I can order from Wyeast in Oregon. Thanks , the site looks very interesting and informative gord

Hop Rhizomes

Ask the MoB Hey guys, this is a fantastic resource! I have been directed here in search of hop rhizomes and understand MOB may be able to help. I am Toronto based and previous local supplies seem to have dried up. Now that I want to plant my own hops I am having trouble finding any in Canada. I am planning on buying from freshops.com but if there is anything local it would be preferable. Can you guys make any recommendations as to what grows well in these parts? I wanted to plant Willamette (as a fuggles substitute) Goldings, Cascade possible and Chinook for bittering. Actually does anyone have a line on Challenger hops?

One last question....When the vines reach 20 feet what is the best strategy to tell your wife "but honey, I really did'nt know they would get so big!"
Cheers and thanks.
BB
