It's that time of year again - Big Strange Brew 7 is just around the corner! This is an annual event where brewers get together with their equipment "to brew a crazy amount of beer". Non-brewers are invited to come out and see what all-grain brewing is all about. We still do not have all the plans finalised for this year, but typically it goes like this ...

The big brew was a blast, learned a lot about brewing with grains. Loved Waynearoons and Danaroons, But Tim's Bitter stole the show.

I see Big Strange New Brunswick Brew 4 is coming up and I am interested in going, all I make so far for brews are from kits, is this a problem? I would like to move away from them soon, but all I will have in time will be a blackrock mexican lager.

Outage

The MoB website suffered an outage from April 4 to April 7 due to a crashed harddrive. Unfortunately, the backup system was not working correctly for the past few months so any submissions since November 2005 have been lost.

If you contributed an article or comment since November you may be able to recover it using Google's cache service. You can do this by entering a search in google of the form "site:barleyment.wort.ca keywords" and clicking on the "cached" link under the appropriate search result.

Note that the data loss applies only to submitted articles, comments, CO-OP orders, and et cetera but images and other uploaded files were recovered.

March in Montreal 2005

I'd like to invite everyone to submit their entries for the 2005 edition of March in Montreal. Last year was our best year with almost 200 entries and we hope to top that this year. We will be accepting entries from all beer categories in the new 2004 BJCP style guidelines as well as a special look-a-like category. Sorry, no cider or mead. The competition will be judged by BJCP-recognized judges with the exception of the look-a-like category which will be judged by the professionals of the brewery. This year's look-a-like beer is Le Cheval Blanc Blanche from Brasseurs RJ. The deadline for submissions is
19-Feb-05. Categories will be collapsed if necessary and awards will be granted in each judged category. This year's winner of Best of Show will be brewed and bottled for commercial release by La Brasserie Les Trois Mousquetaires. The brewer's name will appear on the label (unless the brewer prefers not). Competition entry forms are available from CABA's website at www.homebrewers.ca in the Competitions section.

Please note that the competition forms incorrectly list Le Cheval Blanc Ambree as the look-alike beer if you downloaded them prior to now. The corrected forms should soon be available on the CABA website. To be clear, the look-alike category is Le Cheval Blanc Blanche.

Club bulk malt purchase

The annual bulk malt purchase is under way. Every year MoB members in the National Capital region organize a bulk purchase of malt which is delivered to Ottawa and divided between the participants afterwards.

If you would like to participate in this bulk purchase do not hesitate to place your order as it will close soon. If you have a MoB website account, simply click the "Malt Orders" link in the Member CO-OP area and view the September/October order. If you don't have an account, what are you waiting for?

Each year on the first Saturday in May, homebrewers gather with friends and family to celebrate National Homebrew Day, promote homebrewing and brew a lot of beer. All brewers, non-brewers and family are welcome to attend.

CALGARY HOMEBREWING COMP!

Hey you guys and gals,

I would like to invite MOB to enter the Calgary Open Homebrew Competition to be judged on the Summer Solstice (June 21). It's BJCP and in honor of the solstice, we are having a special fun class for non-advancers to the BOS round. It's called the "best lawnmower beer" and this is redefined as the most tasty beer to NOT advance to the finals.

For more information, please contact me at timoborn@shaw.ca

Thanks and hope to taste your beer!
